Vintage Greek Orthodox Relief Icon Nikos Varveris Affresco Handmade Jesus

Greek Orthodox Embossed Relief Icon – Nikos Varveris – Affresco Handmade

A striking Greek Orthodox Christian embossed relief icon, marked ΝΙΚΟΣ ΒΑΡΒΕΡΗΣ (Nikos Varveris), featuring a highly detailed central image of Christ surrounded by ornate Byzantine-style decoration and surrounded by four corner roundels depicting the Four Evangelists.

The original accompanying label explains that these embossed icons are handmade using the “affresco” technique, consisting of many small pieces assembled together. It also describes an intentionally aged appearance, including the visual effect of cracked, weathered and freshly gilded plaster similar to restoration work seen in old churches and monasteries.

The icon has a dramatic antique-style surface with extensive gold, bronze, brown and dark patina effects. The raised relief work, ornamental scrollwork, halos and central religious scene give the piece substantial depth and visual character.

Condition

Pre-owned condition with an intentionally distressed, aged and heavily textured appearance. The surface contains variations, discoloration, raised material, patina, wear and imperfections consistent with the decorative technique described on the original label. The wooden frame also shows age-related wear.
