Byzantine Flag – Double-Headed Eagle (3x5 ft)

The Byzantine Flag features the double-headed eagle, the emblem most closely linked with the Byzantine Empire and with Orthodox Christianity today. Choose from four colors: yellow, black, red or purple.

Was there a Byzantine flag?
The Byzantine Empire did not have a national flag in the modern sense; it used a range of imperial banners and emblems. The double-headed eagle became associated with the empire in its later centuries, especially under the Palaiologos dynasty. Today it is flown by the Church of Greece and on Mount Athos — most familiarly as a black eagle on a gold-yellow field — and it is used by the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople.

What does the double-headed eagle mean?
The two heads are commonly understood to look East and West, and to express the harmony of Church and State in the Christian Roman Empire.
