The Golgotha Cross Flag honors the Cross of Christ raised on Golgotha (Calvary), the hill outside Jerusalem where our Lord was crucified. For Orthodox Christians the Golgotha cross is not a sign of defeat but of Christ's victory over death.
What is the Golgotha cross?
In Orthodox tradition, the Golgotha cross is the three-bar cross shown standing on the hill of Calvary. It is often accompanied by the skull of Adam — recalling the tradition that Adam was buried beneath the place of the Crucifixion — along with the spear and the sponge of the Passion, and inscriptions such as IC XC NIKA ("Jesus Christ conquers"). The same cross appears on the Great Schema worn by Orthodox monastics.

FAQs
Q: What is a Golgotha cross?
A: It is the Orthodox three-bar cross shown on the hill of Golgotha (Calvary), where Christ was crucified. It proclaims Christ's victory over death.
Q: Why is there often a skull at the foot of the Golgotha cross?
A: It represents the skull of Adam. Tradition holds that Adam was buried at Golgotha, so Christ's blood, shed on the Cross, reaches the first man.
Q: Is Golgotha the same as Calvary?
A: Yes. Golgotha is the Aramaic name and Calvary comes from the Latin; both mean "place of the skull".
Q: What do letters like IC XC NIKA mean?
A: IC XC abbreviates "Jesus Christ" and NIKA means "conquers" — together, "Jesus Christ conquers".
